joe biden goes head to head with congressman paul ryan in the vice presidential debate. of course, our anticipation is heightened by the loss that the champ took in round one on wednesday night. president obama pulled a lot of his punches in his debate with governor romney, so if the original strategy was for biden to go in with a soft touch against paul ryan, we can be sure that that is going out the window. he is coming out swinging. gloves off. now, romney was able to dodge blows against his economic plan because actually there's not much of a plan there to jab at. take his strategy for economic recovery, to fill the revenue gap for a result from tax cuts is an exercise in shadow boxing futility. he hasn't yet told us what it is he's planning to do. but by hitching his wagon to paul ryan and endorsing ryan's budget plan, he attached himself to clearly articulated policy and a record that leaves the whole ticket exposed to attack which gives joe biden an opening to hit romney so hard -- to hit ryan so hard that mitt romney is going to feel it too. from the sound of it, the vice presi

-presidential debate. vice-president joe biden. do you have any sort of suggestions or hadn'ts or thoughts for congressman paul ryan? >> paul ryan, he took the gloves off and really hammer home some details about joe biden's record, 30-some years of opposing america's energy independence opportunities that we had. joe biden 30-some years ago, voted against the trans-alaska pipeline and henceforth has never supported steps to allow america to be energy independent. if paul ryan can detail what it is that he and governor romney propose to do to allow our private sector to go and thrive and create jobs, including energy independence, the audience will appreciate that. after the debate, paul ryan just needs to watch his back. that's my advice. you know, if things don't go his way, people will be looking for a scapegoat. i hope that people have learned over the last four years that, that doesn't do anybody any good, to throw candidates under the bus, when they did their best, they stood on their record, their principles and their convictions and when the inside baseball crap starts getting play
ryan goes up against joe biden, and candidates have less and less tried to paint it as a victory, nobody agrees with it. and david axelrod said the president let mitt romney get away with too much. the president is his own worst critic. and robert gibbs, of course, works directly for the campaign, and newt gingrich talked more about the campaign, let's have a little bit more of a listen. >> it is not rocket science to believe that the president was disappointed in the expectations he has for himself. but look, i think part of that was because as i said earlier, we met a new mitt romney, we met a mitt romney that wanted to walk away from the central theory of his economic plan, which was his tax cut. i don't have a tax plan that is 4.8 trillion, i am not going to cut taxes on the rich. i don't have a voucher plan, i love teachers, i think we need more of them. don't believe me, speaker gingrich was eloquent in the primaries, saying that mitt romney will say absolutely anything to get elected. >> the president had 90 minutes, now, if he had done his homework and prepared, if he had
about the economy. they went after joe biden for his gaffe on saying the middle class has done poorly under the president, but i think, again, they're trying to do things in this tactical way that just hasn't worked for them so far and i think every day they're not having mitt romney out forcefully explaining what the president has done on the economy, is not a great day for them. now, he's in a better place than a lot of the pundits have suggested but i don't really think they have days to waste on things like this and the backlash against it was so strong. when drudge tees something up, even though he tilts right and even though a lot of people denigrate him, it gives the republicans an opportunity to dominate a news cycle. when they cry wolf with a 5-year-old video, it undermineds something so effective as a delivery mechanism over the years. >> i want to open this up to our panel here. karen, the debate, structure of the debate tonight, three segments on the economy, one segment on health care, one segment on the role of economy. no question on vintage youtube clips which is a tot
